Grain Storage and Processing Technology includes: storage of grain and seeds of other crops in elevators and warehouses, grain processing into flour at milling plants, into cereals at cereals production facilities and into feed at compound feed mills.

The educational process is carried out in accordance with the curricula of the speciality, the curriculum of the disciplines developed by the teachers of the department. The training program doesn't remain unchanged but is constantly updated in the context of the current trends in the development of the bread products industry.

For improvement of the quality of training of specialists, integration of the training process with the production, contacts are maintained with "STOLYCNHYJ MLYN" LLC, "Myronivskyi Khliboprodukt" PJSC, "Kyivkombikorm" Branch of "Complex Agromars" LLC, "Skvyrskyi Bread Products Combine" LLC, "Bilotserkivkliboproduct" CE, "Boryspil Experimental Combined Feed Plant" PJSC, and "State Center of Certification and Expert Examination of Agricultural Products" SE and other grain storage and processing enterprises. They are used for undergoing of technological and pre-graduation practical training by students. Laboratories of the enterprises are equipped with modern equipment enabling students to study methods and tools for assessment of the quality of vegetable agricultural raw materials and finished products.

A great attention is paid by teachers of the department to creative work of students furthering improvement of the quality of training of specialists and individualization of the process of teaching students. Students of the department actively participate in the international scientific conference held in the NUFT in the middle of April every year, where they present reports on various topics relating to research works carried out by them.

The entire educational process at the department is aimed at developing students' love for the chosen profession, for acquiring solid knowledge, developing a creative attitude to the educational process, development of autonomy, logical thinking and responsibility.

The growth of the scientific level of teachers and employees is facilitated by the presence at the university of a specialized academic council for the defense of doctoral and candidate's theses according to the profile of the department. Prof. I. Haponiuk - a member of the specialized academic council.

The versatile training enables our graduates to work in state, commercial, design, research, and manufacturing spheres at various organizations of all forms of ownership.

Graduation project preparing is a responsible stage of studies of students at the higher educational institution. In the course of preparing of his/her graduation project, the future specialist fulfills his/her creative potential, the ability to solve engineering problems independently. The objective of preparing of graduation projects is consolidation, broadening and systematization of students’ knowledge, development of their skills of making engineering simulation, graphic presentation of works, learning to apply the obtained knowledge while solving practical problems. Thus, in his/her graduation project the student should reflect the level of his/her knowledge in theoretical, general technical, special and socioeconomic disciplines.

The student shall prepare a graduation project according to one of the following topics:

  1. Elevator construction or reconstruction project;
  2. Groats mill construction or reconstruction project (tasks differ by the type and range of products produced, productive capacity of facilities and manufacturing process);
  3. Flour milling plant construction or reconstruction project;
  4. Compound feed plant construction or reconstruction project.

THE LIST OF PROFESSIONAL SUBJECTS FOR STUDENTS FOR THE ACADEMIC DEGREE OF “MASTER”:

  • research practicum;
  • optimization methods in grain technologies;
  • management of quality and product safety in grain technologies;
  • innovations in grain technologies;
  • topical issues of grain science;
  • technological audit in grain technologies;
  • grain additives.

Given below are examples of topics of master’s theses:

  1. Study of the process of pelleting of feed materials enriched with liquid components.
  2. Study of the influence of the term of storage of grain on its quality indicators.
  3. Study of the production efficiency of the equipment of a flour milling plant with a short milling flow.
  4. Study of the stability of functioning of the milling section of a flour milling plant.
  5. Study of the technological properties of seeds of unconventional raw materials.
  6. Study of the comprehensive assessment of the quality of the product of buckwheat grain processing using microwave beams.

Master’s degree students are assessed by the examining board based on the analysis of academic progress and assessment of the quality of solving by them of professional and socio-professional problems, provided for by the relevant master’s qualification profile.

In addition to that, Masters of Grain Storage and Processing Technology are assessed according to the following levels and criteria:

  1. conceptual – knowledge and reproduction of conceptual and categorical information about objects, things, properties, processes, methods and ways of activity;
  2. fundamental – knowledge of the theory, laws, regularities, objects, subjects of methods and ways of activity that are necessary for taking and implementation of effective decisions, including under extreme conditions;
  3. application, creative – knowledge of the theory, laws, regularities, objects, subjects of methods and ways of activity at the level sufficient for formation and implementation of one’s own model of professional activity, including under extreme conditions.

The educational and professional program for master training consists of professional, scientific and socio-humanitarian training.

Consolidation of theoretical training and acquisition of practical skills is achieved by master’s degree students while undergoing practical training at modern enterprises in the industry and research institutions.

The width of the master training profile in grain storage and processing technology is determined by three factors, more specifically: fundamental and profession oriented knowledge of the future master, spheres of use of such knowledge in the industry and the range of professional and socio-professional functions performed by the master.

Research at the department is carried out in two areas. Under the direction of Prof. O.I. Shapovalenko scientific research in the area of "Development and Improvement of Technologies of Storage and Processing of Grain Crops for the Purposes of Obtaining Feed and Food Products of Improved Quality and Range".

Results of the scientific research in such areas are published by employees of the department in leading academic periodicals.

The staff of the department constantly establishes scientific contacts with foreign specialized higher educational institutions and scientific organizations. Teachers of the department maintain creative and scientific contacts with: the Technical University of Moldova; Research Institute for Starch Processing (China); Wroclaw Agricultural Institute (Poland); Chinese National Research Institute of the Food Industry, Industrial Technology Institute (Sri Lanka); State Laboratory of Quality of Agricultural Raw Materials (Thailand).

The department closely cooperates with leading enterprises in the industry and provides scientific and practical advice to enterprises on drying of grain, setting, operation and assessment of efficiency of technological and air conveyer lines and aspiration systems. The department has a significant annual fund for performance of contractual research topics relating to grain drying, designing new and reconstruction of existing grain-processing and grain-storage enterprises. Within the framework of such works, a considerable part of technical and scientific developments, as well as own scientific research works of the department are introduced into production at enterprises of different ownership forms.
